Vernon L. Lay, 95, passed away on December 25, 2014 at Hospice House of Reno County, Hutchinson, Kansas. The son of Charles and Nellie Lay, he was born March 21, 1919 in Chicago, Illinois. He was a heavy equipment operator by profession. A recipient of two Purple Hearts, and, a Bronze Star, he was a Veteran of the United States Army, serving in both Word War II and the Korean War, and also was a member of the Kansas Army National Guard. He was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, a volunteer for the Hutchinson Fire Department, and Hutchinson Volunteer Police Officers. In his spare time he loved gardening, woodworking, and as a “hobby man” he could fix anything that needed to be repaired or built. On April 8, 1941, he married the love of his life, Dorothy, in Great Bend, Kansas. After 70 years of marriage, she preceded him in death, November 24, 2011. Survivors include 1 son, Glenn Lay (his companion – Debbie Ash); 2 daughters, Karen Gonzales, Ruth Ann Lay; 6 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 son, Charles, 4 step brothers, 2 step sisters, 1 great grandson, 1 granddaughter. Graveside service with military honors will be Tuesday, December 30, 2014 at 1:30 pm at Fairlawn Burial Park, Hutchinson, Kansas. In lieu of flowers the family has established memorials to either The Wounded Warrior Project or Hospice House of Reno County, or your memorial of choice, and left in care of the funeral home.
